I am 26 and 28 weeks preggo weighing 108 lbs with my 4th pregnancy with no prior problems in my last three, but recently had a Glucose reading of 147 not high but elevated. I had pancakes for breakfast that morning and drank a moutain dew on the way to the doctors before the 1 hour test,( stupid me) Do you think that could have altered the results. I REALLY HATE needles and don’t want to go through with it if it’s not necessary, is this something my doctor should know, should I be retesting the one hour test with no prior sugar, getting my blood drawn 4 times in three hours is very traumatic for me. Is changing my diet a solution help. I am an anxiety basket case
Is it necessary for me to take the 3 hour glucose test during pregnancy?

In this situation, I would have told the dr. that you ate before the test when you weren’t supposed to (and quite a sugary meal at that) and would request a re-do on the 1 hour test under the correct circumstances. The glucose tolerance test is supposed to measure your body’s response to a very specific amount of sugar, and you really added a lot on top of that specified amount. If you fail a correctly done 1-hour test, then yeah I’d take the 3-hour.
edit: Doodlestuff, I SO agree with you.
edit again: Seriously? Thumbs down? Either someone has no idea whatsoever how a glucose test works, or they have way too much time on their hands.
If they tell you to you have to. Especially if it was elevated, I scored a 72 (dr said it was perfect score) my first time, and you’re a 147.
Look away when they draw your blood, and just get it over with, You don’t want to have diabetes and not know do you? So just get it over with, it isn’t a big deal.
You should not having eaten anything, it could just be from your breakfast but I would take it again just be safe and this time DON’T EAT.
Its for both you & your child. I have rubbish veins and was admitted into hospital with pre eclampsia at 31 weeks and had to have blood tests every other day, a Glucose Tolerance Test, and a platelet count every 4 hours while in labour (plus a drip), and as much as I hate having bloods done, I just got on with it because it wasn’t just for my own health, but my unborn child too. If you didn’t have the test and then something happened to your baby because they didn’t pick up a problem you would never forgive yourself x
)
Not fasting the first time is what screwed me over too.
I had to do the 3 hour test then.
If your doctor ordered you to do the 3 hour test, you really should.
Let me tell you what happened on the day I had my 3 hour test done…
I woke up extra early, showed up early and got my blood drawn 4 times.
Then I had to rush to my doctor’s office to get my RhoGam shot.
Then I had to rush to my WIC appointment at which they pricked me to check my iron levels.
Then I had to run to the pharmacy to get my prescription. Just as I parked, this @$$hole in his giant SUV was backing up and the phucker hit my brand new car. Then we had to wait for the cops etc.
So there was a lot of poking and pricking of my body that day.
Don’t worry you can handle the needles. It doesn’t even hurt. I actually didn’t even feel mine.
Tell them you are squeamish around needles and they’ll help to calm you down. They’ll be very gentle to make it a good experience for you.
No. You can refuse any test that you want.
If your glucose reading was over 150, then there might be a concern, but at 147 it’s a big nothing especially considering the meal you had. The cutoff for even doing the 3 hour test in my clinic is 150. Many doctors use lower levels than recommended by the American Diabetes Assoc. which I think is wrong. Among other things, the diagnosis can make getting life insurance later much more expensive.
Yes, pancakes and mountain dew would have influenced the test. Just say no.
I did that with my first pregnancy, the doctors office didn’t tell me that I couldn’t have anything to eat or drink during the hour wait! They did make me take the 3 hour test and everything came out fine. With this one, I did everything by the book and still failed!!!! I had to en dour the 3 hour test again! I understand your anxiety, I was the same way and put the 3 hr test off until just this past Monday. I tried everything to talk the doctor into letting me just do the hour test. He explained that with the 3 hour test it is how your body is using the sugars, and how long it takes to get out of your system. Hope that helps!
